Increase your Google Pagerank with Backlinks

If you are interested in getting your website to the top of the search listings, you need to know something about PageRank. PageRank is a value google assigns to your website based on how valuable Google determines the page is. PageRank is sometimes referred to as PR.

If you have a new website, you start with a PR of 0. The highest PR attainable is 10. A couple of sites with a PR10 are google.com and microsoft.com. There are very few PR10 websites.

There are a couple of ways to determine the PR of a website. The best way is to install the Google Toolbar. Once installed, you need to go to Settings - More - Even More Buttons - and check PageRank and Page Info. Simply click the ok button and your browser is setup to show google pagerank.

Now when you visit a page, you'll notice the PageRank button at the top of your browser will turn green. Just run your mouse over the top of it, and it will display the google pagerank.

One of the best ways to increase your pagerank or pr is with backlinks. Backlinks are links to your website from other sites on the web. When google finds a site that links to yours, it views this link as a "vote" for your site. The more votes you get, the higher your pagerank.

Not all backlinks are created equal. Google takes into consideration the relevancy and the pagerank of the site linking to you when determining the value of a link. For instance, if you setup a website to sell computer software, a link from a PR10 site like Microsoft.com would get you more PR votes than a link from a PR0 site selling baseball cards.

Understanding pagerank is just one thing you need to understand if you plan to make it to the top of the search engines.
