Adding New Content

I just spent three hours adding additional content to my site and organizing everything into categories. I'm about to get the site structure just like I want it. This is the same content I purchased a few weeks ago, so there are no new costs associated with the content this week.

Posting To Article Directories

I also spent some time posting a couple of articles to article directories. This is a great way to build backlinks and get referral traffic direct from the article directories you are posting to. There are a couple of things to keep in mind when posting to article sites.

1. Don't submit the same articles you have posted on your site to article directories. If you want your site to rank well, then you can't post it's content across dozens of article sites and not expect it to hurt your rankings. I make sure the articles I post to article directories aren't posted on any of my sites.

2. Don't submit your article to hundreds of article directories. My internet buddy, Josh Spaulding, is an expert on article marketing and he recommends submitting to a small handful of the best article directories. Josh has an ebook on article marketing that is well worth the money and will give you all the ins and outs of article marketing.

3. Submitting to article directories can be time consuming. You can automate the task with a software called Article Post Robot. I've used APR for years and it automates the process of posting to a group of articles sites of your choosing. If you purchase APR, I can promise you it is money well spent.

Purchased A New Domain Name

I've been using a website called FreshDrop.net to find expired domain names with existing backlinks. Fresh Drop allows you to filter expired domain names by almost any criteria you can think of. Since my site is about Acne Prevention, I've been using Fresh Drop to show a list of expired domains that contain the word acne.

I found a gem today. I found a three year old domain name that was previously an acne treatment forum. This domain had over 50 existing backlinks with acne related anchor text.

The purpose of purchasing expired domain names it twofold. When I 301 redirect the expired domain, my site will get credit for the existing backlinks and I'll be able to pick up any existing traffic coming from those links.

Concern Over Site

I've managed to get enough visitors over the last 7 days to yield over 300 page impressions that have Adsense ads. The concerning part is the CTR for the Adsense ads is very low. I mean less than 6% low. My comparison, some of my successful Adsense sites have a CTR of 25% plus.

For this site to be successful, I've got to get the CTR up. The best way to accomplish this is by split testing different Adsense ads and see how the site is effected by different ad sizes, colors, and positioning.

Purchasing an expired domain name with existing backlinks is a great idea. This can minimize your work on acquiring new baklinks since the domain already has existing ones.

Thanks for taking the time to walk us through this Brent. Very cool case study that will hopefully inspire others to work things out as well. I just stumbled onto your blog and I’m gonna hit the archives…:) Take care and all the best.

@Lyle – Thanks for stopping by. I’ve found you can show people step by step, but most aren’t going to follow it because they want instant results. It just doesn’t work that way with SEO. It can be frustrating to work day after day and not really know if that work is going to yield anything valuable. But I guess it is that way with most things in life. Most things that are worth having aren’t easily attained.

@Justin – Have you ever used this strategy? It’s going to be hard to determine how effective it is on this project because I have so many other variables at work. I’d like to setup a new project that involved getting a new domain name and only using recently expired domain names for backlinks. It’d be interesting to see how well it does.
