I spent the last 2 1/2 hours working on my SEO project site. My focus today was building backlinks. Here are the methods I used to start building backlinks to my site.

Paid Directories

I've had mixed results with paid directory links. I once paid $299 for a link from the Yahoo Directory only to find my search rank take a beating. You can view the results of my Yahoo Directory Test here.

I've also had some good experience with paid directory submissions. Here are the results of the last paid directory links I purchased.

One thing I've learned about backlinks, you want them to appear natural. You don't want too many too quickly. For the time being, I only submitted my site to JoeAnt.com and BOTW.org. I may add as many as 2 paid submissions a month provided my budget holds up.

WordPress.com Blog

I have used this strategy in the past, but it's nearly impossible to determine how effective it is. It's as simple as creating a blog on the WordPress.com domain name, using your keywords in the title of the blog, filling it up with related content from article sites, and then creating a blog roll that links to your site.

This is a good method for creating quality backlinks from a trusted domain.

Expired Domains

There are thousands of domain names that expire everyday. Many of these will have hundreds or thousands of backlinks, DMOZ Directory links, and high PR pages. You can snatch one of these domains up for only $15 and use a redirect to point all those backlinks to your site.

The key here is to find an expired domain name related to your site. You wouldn't want to point backlinks from a domain related to Jet Ski's to your Acne Prevention site.

Fresh Drop is a great tool for find expired domains and filtering them by any criteria you choose. You can even search the domains for your keywords.

I was able to pick up a domain name with 22 quality backlinks related to my site. I'll be checking Fresh Drop at least once a week. This maybe a great place to find some more quality backlinks related to acne prevention.

Bookmarking Demon

I ran another pass with Bookmarking Demon. The sites bookmarked included the important pages from my project site as well as the new WordPress blog I created.
